Kinning Park Forum: Beyond Cuts

Saturday 30th October  – 12.30pm-5pm at Kinning Park Community Centre

Right to the City Forum
This is an open invitation to all those who seek to overcome political sectarianism, respect difference, and develop new and ongoing models of cultural and political activity in a time where the need for such organisation is self-evident. Please distribute widely.

PART ONE

13.15 – 13.45: Three short films historically contextualising the current political and economic situation.

FILM or SOUND FILE 1.
Naomi Klein on Shock Doctrine (select either of two?)

clip 1 – 7:18

clip 2 – 7:22

FILM or SOUND FILE 2.
Naomi Klein on “ideas have consequences” (select either of two?) :

clip 1 – 11:46 to 20:28 (8:42)
clip 2 – 43:16 to 51:27 (8:11)

FILM or SOUND FILE 3.
RSA Animate – Crises of Capitalism, David Harvey (11:10)

13-45 – 14.00: Short break.

14.00 – 14.45: What’s actually happening? – facilitated small group discussions of film material (film clips are the ‘provocations’ – set up as a proposition, as ‘themes’ as problematics for discussions – that we realise they’re limited but intended to create some room for self-reflexivity)
14.45 – 15.00: Short break.

PART TWO

15.00 – 15.45: What does this analysis mean to us?

We will choose a text / cuttings outlining the stated budget cuts at that point, while remaining alert to policy flexibility and continuous nature of the process itself, to frame these facilitated discussions around ‘cutbacks’ (which might better be seen as the redistribution of wealth/ risk/ resources in an ongoing process of state-secured privatisation).

Still in small groups (might we want to vary groups at any stage?)

Part 1 : ‘Where we are’ – personal accounts of how austerity measures (seen in the present context and as part of historical processes) are affecting us and/or people we know.

Part 2 : ‘How we struggle’ – personal accounts of how we find agency (individually or collectively) emphasing how this may or may not be a part of larger movement of resistance.

15.45 – 16.30: Wider discussion between tables.
